Some days call for a trail. Others call for a locomotive cab, a little museum, a slow walk through town, or a bird you have never noticed before. These are places that give a Lost Sierra stay its texture—and give a mixed group more ways to enjoy the same trip.

  1. Start with the rail yard. ↗

Give the collection a generous morning; add train rides only when scheduled.

  2. See the town through a home. ↗

Visit when its seasonal schedule lines up, or leave more time for lunch.

  3. Finish beside the river. ↗

An easy walk is a good change of pace after all that machinery.

THE QUESTIONS THAT HELP YOU CHOOSE

THE QUESTIONS THAT HELP YOU CHOOSE

Before you
head out.

Before you
head out.

What are the best things to do near Graeagle and Portola besides hiking?

Start with the Western Pacific Railroad Museum, Plumas-Eureka’s mining history, a Graeagle village afternoon, or Sierra Valley Preserve’s Nature Center and wildlife viewing. Mini golf and local museums add shorter outings between bigger days.

Which outings are closest to the Lodge?

Portola’s railroad museum, Williams House, Riverwalk, and Baldwin Park are about ten minutes away by car. Downtown Graeagle and the Golf Center are about eleven minutes away, with the Jim Beckwourth cabin and Sierra Valley Preserve around fifteen minutes away.

What can we do with children?

The railroad museum, seasonal mini golf, Baldwin Park, and a short nature walk can all suit a family outing. Choose by your children’s interests and comfort with the terrain. The rail yard has uneven ground and active equipment; supervise closely and follow museum directions.

Which museums are good for a rainy day?

Plumas County Museum has substantial indoor galleries, and Williams House and the Jim Beckwourth cabin offer indoor history when open. Plumas-Eureka also has a seasonal museum. The railroad museum is largely outdoors, so do not treat it as an all-weather indoor attraction.

Can we bring a dog to these places?

Rules differ. Sierra Valley Preserve does not allow dogs in its Nature Center or on trails; a limited on-leash allowance applies to the North Entrance’s paved Austin Road and designated parking areas. Plumas-Eureka restricts dogs on most trails. Check each operator’s rules and plan a suitable outing for everyone.

Do we need reservations?

Run-A-Locomotive is a separate paid experience best arranged with the museum in advance. Group visits, tours, special trains, and events may also need planning. Ordinary museum admission and a walk through a village are different from reserving a specific activity.

Are these attractions open year-round?

Many museums, tours, train rides, rentals, and mini golf operate seasonally or on limited weekly schedules. Village businesses keep individual hours, and mountain roads can be affected by snow. Check the operator shortly before your outing.
