Railroad history on a scale you can stand beside.
Walk into a historic rail yard where locomotives, cabooses, passenger cars, and the tools of a working railroad bring Portola’s story into focus. This is an outing for curious families as much as committed train enthusiasts: machinery at full size, details at eye level, and plenty to explore at your own pace.
Look a little closer
Walk among vintage locomotives and rolling stock, using the museum’s web tour for context.
Look for equipment specifically marked open to visitors; access to individual cars varies.
Check the calendar for summer caboose rides and seasonal special trains. Museum admission and train rides are separate experiences.
Host tip: Make this the anchor of a Portola morning, then leave the afternoon open for lunch and the Riverwalk. Train lovers will want longer than two hours. For time at the controls, reserve Run-A-Locomotive separately.
Getting there: 700 Western Pacific Way, Portola. Check the museum’s visitor page and operating calendar before leaving. Allow extra time if a train ride or special event is the reason for your visit.
Before you go: Much of the visit is outside on gravel, rails, steps, and uneven ground. Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes, supervise children, and follow staff directions around equipment. Ask the museum about the specific access your group needs.
