LOCAL PHOTOGRAPH / THE LOST SIERRA
An old gold-mining story, still written into the mountain.
The former miners’ bunkhouse, historic mining buildings, and enormous stamp-mill structure make this more than an indoor museum stop. It is a chance to place the machinery and the people back in their landscape, with Jamison Creek and the slopes of Eureka Peak close by.
Look a little closer
Begin with the museum when it is open, then explore the designated historic area.
Look for the Mohawk Stamp Mill, mine office, blacksmith shop, and other preserved mining structures.
Summer tours and demonstrations add context when scheduled; ask what is available on your visit.
Host tip: Visit the historic complex before driving through Johnsville. Once you have seen how the mining operation worked, the little mountain community becomes part of a much larger story. Add a picnic or the Madora Lake walk if the group wants more time outdoors.
Getting there: 310 Johnsville Road, Blairsden. Day-use grounds and museum opening schedules differ. Check California State Parks for the museum, programs, road access, and current conditions.
Before you go: The park offers year-round day use, but museum buildings and programs are seasonal. Remain in designated public areas and keep out of closed mine openings or structures. Dogs are restricted on most trails; check the park’s exact permitted routes before bringing one.
