A quiet mining town with a wonderfully unlikely sporting legacy.

Johnsville holds its history in forested roads, surviving buildings, and the mountain above it. Gold mining shaped the community; winter gave it another story. The Plumas Ski Club keeps the region’s longboard-racing tradition alive at the ski bowl, where enormous wooden skis and period-inspired dress make race days unlike an ordinary mountain outing.

Look a little closer

Enjoy the historic atmosphere from public roads and designated recreation areas.

Pair the community with the mining exhibits at nearby Plumas-Eureka State Park.

Look to the Plumas Ski Club for current longboard races, ski-bowl events, and winter access information.

Host tip: Start at the mining museum, then continue into town. If a longboard race falls during your stay, make that the day’s main event and check the organizer’s plans again close to travel. A summer visit has a quieter, more reflective appeal.

Getting there: Follow Johnsville Road toward Johnsville. Check the ski club’s current information for event parking and access to the ski bowl. Services and cellular coverage are limited; save directions before leaving.

Before you go: Johnsville is a residential community. Keep driveways clear and respect private property. The ski bowl is quiet between events; this is not a promise of daily lift service or an operating resort. Snow, ice, and road access shape winter visits.
