Climbing from historic Johnsville to Eureka Lake is one of the best ways to experience the landscape surrounding Plumas-Eureka State Park. The trail rises through the forest toward a peaceful mountain lake beneath Eureka Peak, trading the bustle of the historic park grounds for increasingly expansive views and cool alpine air.
The approach: The route begins near Johnsville and the historic Eureka Ski Bowl area within Plumas-Eureka State Park.
Along the way: A steady uphill journey on mountain terrain. Shade, trail conditions, and remaining snow vary with the season, and the effort can feel greater at this elevation.
Host tip: Do not rush back as soon as you reach the water. Bring lunch or a fishing rod and let Eureka Lake become part of the day rather than simply the turnaround point.
Before you go: Snow can linger well into the hiking season. State-park dog restrictions apply to most trails; confirm the exact route with the park before bringing a dog. Road access and day-use conditions change seasonally.
