The painted “P” overlooking Portola is a familiar local landmark—and reaching it turns that landmark into a rewarding little adventure. The route begins gently on a forest road before making a much steeper final climb to the rocks above town. From the top, Portola, the surrounding valleys, and the forested mountains spread out below you.
The approach: Access begins near the Portola ballfields and Forest Road 14M03. The final portion of the approach road is unpaved; passenger-car drivers can park lower and walk the additional distance.
Along the way: A gradual forest-road approach followed by a short but strenuous final ascent. The upper section is steep, loose, exposed to the sun, and occasionally slippery.
Host tip: Save this hike for a clear day and bring binoculars. From above, you can appreciate Portola’s unusual setting between the mountains and trace the path of the railroad through town.
Before you go: There are no services or dependable water sources along the route. Avoid the exposed upper rocks during thunderstorms, high winds, or icy conditions.
