LOCAL PHOTOGRAPH / THE LOST SIERRA
The region’s stories, brought into the same conversation.
Mountain Maidu basketry, mining, railroads, timber, everyday life, and local art give this Quincy museum its breadth. It is a good choice when the group wants to understand how the places in this guide fit together, rather than explore only one town or industry.
Look a little closer
Take time with the Mountain Maidu basket collection and regional history galleries.
Ask which parts of the outdoor Exhibit Yard and historic structures are currently open.
Look for rotating local-art displays and ask about access to the nearby Variel Home.
Host tip: Leave time for Quincy itself: lunch, a walk around the courthouse, and a few independent shops. Ask staff what you might otherwise miss in the Exhibit Yard before heading straight back to the car.
Getting there: 500 Jackson Street, behind the Plumas County Courthouse in Quincy. Check current hours and call ahead for tours or a group visit. The historic home has a separate access schedule.
Before you go: There are indoor galleries and outdoor exhibits, so the whole visit is not weatherproof. Admission and opening days can change. Contact the museum about accessibility and any exhibits that are essential to your plans.
