Madora Lake offers a peaceful forest walk just below Plumas-Eureka State Park. The gentle path circles a small mountain lake beneath tall conifers, with benches placed along the route for sitting, birdwatching, or enjoying reflections on the water. It is quiet, uncomplicated, and especially lovely during mild spring weather, on cool summer mornings, and when autumn color begins appearing around the shoreline.
The approach: Madora Lake Day-Use Area off County Road A-14 toward Johnsville
Along the way: Mostly gentle terrain through forest surrounding the lake. The route is easy to follow, and benches create natural places to pause along the way.
Host tip: Combine Madora Lake with the museum and historic mining grounds at Plumas-Eureka State Park. The two experiences together make an excellent half-day outing without requiring a strenuous hike.
Before you go: The trail is within the State Park. Dogs are not permitted on most Plumas-Eureka trails, including the Madora Lake route. Winter snow can transform the area into a snowshoeing or cross-country-skiing destination.
