LOCAL PHOTOGRAPH / THE LOST SIERRA

Sand Pond is the relaxed swimming companion to a Sardine Lakes outing. A sandy, gradual entry, picnic setting, and mountain backdrop make it appealing for families who want to spend their time at the water rather than on a long approach trail. It is a different experience from the colder, rockier hike-in lakes.

At the water: Bring a towel, a small float, and an easy picnic. The pond is compact and better suited to swimming and simple water play than a full-sized kayaking trip. Lower Sardine is the nearby boating choice, but swimming there is prohibited.

Getting there: Use the day-use parking and established pond access. Picnic facilities and seasonal conditions should be checked before leaving the Lodge.

Host tip: Combine a morning boat ride on Lower Sardine with a swim here, then change for a reserved dinner at the resort.

Before you go: Dogs are prohibited at Sand Pond. Check current recreation-site and interpretive-trail closures; a trail closure can differ from access to the swimming area.
