MAKE ROOM FOR THE HIGH COUNTRY
This is the mountain escape we mean when we talk about the Lost Sierra. The Lakes Basin connects glacially shaped lakes and forested ridges between Graeagle and the Sierra Buttes. Some shorelines are reached by road; others ask you to earn your lunch spot on foot.
Choose one part of the basin and let it set the pace. A morning at Gold Lake, a walk to Long Lake, or a Sardine Lakes outing can each fill a very good day. Distances on a map hide winding roads, trail approaches and the temptation to stop.

THREE STARTING POINTS
01
The easy water day
Choose Sand Pond for a swim, or Packer Lake for a public-access picnic. Take lunch, layers and a towel; let one shoreline be enough.
02
The walk-and-swim day
Pick Long Lake or Smith Lake, download the route, and leave time for the water. A summit extension belongs in a separately planned outing.
03
The Sardine Lakes day
Reserve a Lower Sardine boat, choose Sand Pond or an Upper Sardine hike for swimming, and finish with a separately reserved dinner.
High-country access is seasonal. Snow, road and trail conditions, smoke, cold water and afternoon wind can change a plan. Download directions, carry drinking water and layers, and use established public access. Verify the specific route, pet rules and services before leaving the Lodge.
THE LOST SIERRA LODGE
Return to your own kitchen, comfortable gathering spaces and a relaxed evening at the Lodge. Build a stay with room for the basin, and room to do very little.
