← EXPLORE THE LOST SIERRA
Northern Lakes Basin
A shorter hike with a real climb—and a clear-water reward.
LOCAL PHOTOGRAPH / THE LOST SIERRA
Smith Lake sits in a granite pocket beneath Mount Elwell. The route follows Smith Creek through forest and rocky terrain, making the journey feel larger than the mileage suggests. It is a good choice for active guests who want a genuine hike-in lake and time to linger beside it.
At the water: Bring a swimsuit, lunch, and a towel. Natural shoreline entries allow a refreshing swim, while a lightweight fishing setup can add another way to enjoy the lake. Conventional kayaks or paddleboards are impractical on this climbing approach.
Getting there: The guidebook estimates approximately 2.5 miles round trip and about 750 feet of elevation gain. The distance is modest, but the steady climb deserves sturdy shoes, water, and enough time for a relaxed return.
Host tip: Treat the lake as your destination. A swim and a long lunch are a better first visit than adding an ambitious summit extension.
Before you go: Download the correct route and check seasonal trail conditions. Cold water and changing afternoon weather are part of the high-country setting.
