← EXPLORE THE LOST SIERRA
Lakes Basin
A short walk to blue water, warm granite, and a reason to stay awhile.
LOCAL PHOTOGRAPH / THE LOST SIERRA
Long Lake offers a satisfying middle ground: more of a mountain adventure than a roadside picnic, without requiring a full-day backcountry hike. The approach from the Long Lake and Bear Lakes Trailhead leads to granite shoreline, conifers, and views toward Mount Elwell. The direct lake outing and the longer loop are different commitments.
At the water: Swim from a natural entry that suits your group, picnic on the granite, or fish from shore. A lightweight inflatable can be carried in, but conventional lake-day equipment quickly feels heavy on a rocky trail.
Getting there: The guidebook estimates roughly three-quarters of a mile to the lake. The full Long Lake Loop is approximately 4.7 miles with substantial additional climbing; download the route you actually intend to follow.
Host tip: Take the direct trail in the morning, find your favorite granite perch, and give the swim as much time as the walk.
Before you go: Expect rocky footing, cold water, lingering early-season snow, and limited cell service. Carry everything back out.
