← EXPLORE THE LOST SIERRA
Lakes Basin
A classic Lakes Basin day, with enough shoreline to make it your own.
LOCAL PHOTOGRAPH / THE LOST SIERRA
The largest lake in the Lakes Basin brings a wide-open mountain setting to a straightforward drive-up outing. Come for a paddle, a shoreline picnic, fishing, or time beside the water, with forest and high-country scenery all around. Gold Lake works well when some guests want to be active and others would rather settle in.
At the water: Choose the signed cartop launch and picnic area for hand-carried craft, or the main launch for a trailered boat. Motorized boating shares this lake with paddlers; choose your route and swimming spot accordingly.
Getting there: Follow Gold Lake Highway and confirm the access point that suits your equipment. Bring drinking water and food rather than depending on services at the lake.
Host tip: Make Gold Lake the destination. A long picnic and an unhurried paddle are more rewarding than rushing to collect every nearby lake.
Before you go: Snow, lake levels, and seasonal road conditions affect access. Sierra County requires watercraft self-inspection before launch.
