← EXPLORE THE LOST SIERRA
Near the Sierra Buttes
High-country atmosphere without a long hike to the shoreline.
LOCAL PHOTOGRAPH / THE LOST SIERRA
Packer Lake is simple in the best possible way: a forested mountain lake reached by paved road, with room for a swim, a picnic, and quiet time on the water. It suits a group that wants an alpine setting while keeping the approach manageable. The public picnic site offers tables and a vault toilet.
At the water: Bring a kayak, canoe, or paddleboard for a gentle shoreline exploration, or leave the equipment behind and enjoy a cool swim. Natural entries vary; water shoes make the rocky and uneven shoreline easier.
Getting there: Use the public picnic and lake access rather than assuming resort facilities are public. Pack drinking water, lunch, layers, and your own paddling equipment.
Host tip: Pair an early walk near the Sierra Buttes with a relaxed swim and lunch here, or let Packer Lake fill the afternoon on its own.
Before you go: High-country roads and services are seasonal. Follow posted boating and pet rules and complete Sierra County’s required watercraft self-inspection before launching.
