The Sierra Buttes reflected in the water—and a whole day worth planning.
LOCAL PHOTOGRAPH / THE LOST SIERRA
Lower Sardine Lake is a destination for the view as much as the water. The Sierra Buttes rise sharply beyond the lake, creating a memorable setting for a slow boat ride, fishing, photography, and a reservation at Sardine Lake Resort. Come here for scenic boating; choose nearby Sand Pond or Upper Sardine for a swim.
At the water: The resort rents rowboats and boats with electric trolling motors during its operating season. Reserve ahead, particularly if you want a boat and dinner on the same day. Swimming is prohibited in Lower Sardine Lake.
Getting there: Follow Sardine Lake Road to the public access and resort area. Confirm rental operations and parking before making the longer drive.
Host tip: Book an early boat, leave time to enjoy the view from the water, and reserve lakeside dining separately.
Before you go: The lake and resort are highly seasonal. Sand Pond does not allow dogs, which matters if you plan to combine the two stops.
