GOLF / FAIRWAYS, FRIENDS & TIME TOGETHER
By The Lost Sierra Lodge · Editorial guide
8 min read

This guide suits golf groups planning one or two main rounds from a shared home near Graeagle and Portola, including trips where some guests do not play. Choose courses around ability, tee-time availability and the non-golfers’ transport; five local courses are a choice of outings, not a checklist to finish.

Use The Lost Sierra Lodge near Portola and Graeagle as your shared home base: five bedrooms, three bathrooms, and room for up to ten overnight guests. Start with the golf, then leave space for dinner together, a game of pool, and a slower morning for anyone sitting out a round.

Make sure the house fits your group.
Five bedrooms and three bathrooms give your group a shared home base for up to ten overnight guests. Compare the sleeping arrangements and bathrooms, then see the kitchen and dining setup, pool hall and gathering spaces, and hot tub and outdoor areas. Browse the full gallery together before choosing dates.
Agree on the people before the tee sheet.
Count the golfers separately from the overnight guests. Set a comfortable budget for each round, ask about walking or riding preferences, and decide whether the group wants one main golf day or several. A trip with eight golfers can feel very different from a ten-person stay with four people playing.
Coordinate the stay and the course.
Check available Lodge dates and the booking terms, then check the course’s reservation window and group arrangements. If one course is the reason for the trip, speak with its golf shop before committing the rest of the schedule. For multiple groups, ask about consecutive tee times and the course’s policies; do not assume a single online slot covers everyone.
Choose first: the must-play course and the people playing it.
Confirm next: lodging dates, tee times, and cancellation terms for both.
Arrange separately: transport, rental clubs if needed, and the meal that matters most.
Our local golf guide is the place to compare courses and follow their booking links. Reserve golf directly with the operator. Your Lodge reservation covers the home; it does not include green fees or tee times.
02
You do not need to play every local course to have a memorable trip. Choose a first round for the group you actually have, then add a different setting or style of play if the dates and energy allow. These are starting points, not a ranking.
Grizzly Ranch Golf Club
A Bob Cupp design near Portola, with a mountain setting and five sets of tees. Put it on the shortlist when the group wants a course that feels like an outing in its own right. Ask the golf shop which tees and arrangements suit your players. Course information and reservations.
Whitehawk Ranch Golf Club
Whitehawk Ranch brings the Mohawk Valley landscape into the round. Consider it when the group wants a change of setting alongside another local course. Review the course and current booking information before choosing your day. Explore Whitehawk Ranch.
Plumas Pines Golf Resort
An eighteen-hole Homer Flint design among the pines. Include it in your comparison when a wooded setting appeals to the group. Let the golf shop help match your players to the right tees rather than choosing from a headline yardage alone. Explore Plumas Pines.
Graeagle Meadows Golf Course
In Graeagle, with pines, elevated tees, and water features. It is an option to consider when you want the village to be part of the day as well as the round. Check meal plans and opening hours separately. Explore Graeagle Meadows.
The Dragon at Nakoma
Nakoma’s eighteen-hole Robin Nelson design pairs a mountain round with its Frank Lloyd Wright-designed clubhouse. Consider it when the setting and architecture are part of the appeal. Review the current course information and choose tees that suit the group. Explore the Dragon.
For a closer comparison, return to the Graeagle and Portola golf guide. Current rates, access, course conditions, and reservation policies belong with the operator.
A practical way to choose two rounds.
For a Graeagle-centered day, compare Graeagle Meadows with Plumas Pines and plan any village meal separately. For a different mountain setting, compare Grizzly Ranch with the Dragon. These pairings organize the trip geographically; they are not firsthand difficulty rankings. Whitehawk’s official course description lists four tee sets, while Grizzly lists five—use those options to discuss a mixed-ability round with the golf shop.
If you only have a short window, ask the course whether a nine-hole or practice option is available. Do not squeeze an eighteen-hole booking into the time before a wedding or checkout. For two full golf days, protect one day per round and check aeration and frost-delay policies as well as price.

Arrival: make dinner the plan.
Follow your confirmed check-in time and let everyone settle in. Sort the next day’s departure, equipment, and transport before dinner. Then stop organizing. The stocked kitchen, shared table, pool hall, and poker room give the group plenty to do without heading out again. See the Lodge gathering spaces.
Main golf day: one anchor, a shared evening.
Allow time for the drive, check-in at the golf shop, and whatever warm-up the course offers. Keep lunch flexible around the pace of play. A round plus travel already gives the day a shape; a second major outing is optional. Return for a shared meal or choose a restaurant from our food and drink guide.
Another full day: change the course or change the pace.
If everyone wants another round, choose a second course for a different experience. If only some people want to play, agree on transport and a time to meet again. Others can use the hiking guide, lakes and water guide, or parks and local stories guide to choose their own day. Nobody needs to fill the same scorecard.
Departure: protect the journey home.
Use the check-out time and instructions in your reservation. Add a departure-day round only if it fits comfortably after checkout, with luggage, travel, and the course’s expected pace in mind. An easy breakfast and a straightforward drive home are a good ending too.

Can eight golfers stay together?
Yes, within the Lodge’s ten-guest overnight capacity. There are five bedrooms and three bathrooms. Review the bedroom layouts with your group before booking so everyone is comfortable with the sleeping arrangements. Guest capacity is not a promise of one separate bed per person.
How should we choose courses for mixed abilities?
Start with the least experienced player’s comfort as well as the strongest player’s wish list. Ask the golf shop about tee choices and suitability. One main round with an optional second day often gives a mixed group more freedom than a full schedule everyone is expected to follow.
When should we plan a golf trip?
Golf is seasonal here. Opening and closing dates, weather, frost delays, and maintenance can affect the plan. Confirm your intended courses for the dates you are considering rather than relying on last year’s calendar. Our seasons and local events guide helps you think about the wider stay. The Lodge offers reasons to visit in every season; golf availability is separate.
Are tee times or green fees included with the Lodge?
No. Book the home through our availability calendar and arrange golf directly with each course. Check both sets of terms before committing. This guide is a suggested way to plan a trip, not a stay-and-play package.
What if some guests do not golf?
Give them a real choice of day and a practical transport plan. A village visit, walk, lake picnic, or an afternoon at the Lodge can all work. Agree on one shared meal so the group’s separate days still come back together.
Could we turn it into our own friendly competition?
Keep the format simple, agree on scoring beforehand, and ask the course about any group or event arrangements. For a little vintage golf-trip inspiration, visit The Lost Sierra Lodge Golf Legends Classic. Ask your course directly about organized play; booking the Lodge does not reserve a tournament.
How many nights should we book?
Work backward from the rounds you want, then leave time around arrival and departure. Two full golf days are easier to enjoy when travel is not squeezing both ends. Check the Lodge calendar for availability and the minimum stay that applies to your dates.
Course descriptions were checked against the five operators linked above on October 27, 2026. Published season dates apply to their stated year; ask each course before using them to plan a later season.
Ready to bring the group together?
Check availability and total pricing, share the sleeping plan with your group, and reserve the home under the terms shown for your dates. Then coordinate tee times separately with the courses. Contact Travis and Brittany with a question about the Lodge.
