A little new green. A little room to wander.

Spring reaches the Lost Sierra in stages. The valley begins to green, birds return to the wetlands, and the high country may still hold its winter. It is a lovely time to notice the smaller changes, choose an outing that matches the day, and give the group permission to keep plans loose.

At the Lodge: Start with coffee and a long breakfast around the dining table. Head out when the weather suits you, then return for a game of pool, something good from the kitchen, and an evening with your own people. On a bright afternoon, the deck becomes part of the day again as conditions allow.

Follow the returning birds. Choose the Nature Center and a short preserve walk, with binoculars and layers for the valley wind.

Stay close to town. A clear, dry stretch of Riverwalk and a Portola café make an easy pairing when the mountains are still thawing.

Watch for the seasonal return. Museum operations, train rides, golf, and outdoor events expand on their own schedules; confirm what has reopened.

A day to borrow: A slow breakfast at the Lodge; A valley nature outing or a Portola walk; Lunch in town, then an afternoon that stays flexible; Dinner together and a few games back home

Host tip: Choose the part of the landscape that is ready, rather than the date on the calendar. A spring visit can be wonderful without reaching the highest trailhead.

A warm afternoon in Portola does not mean the Lakes Basin roads or higher trails are open.

Avoid soft, muddy trails and check access before committing to a waterfall or alpine outing.

Pack layers, a rain shell, and shoes suited to wet ground; keep an indoor or town option in reserve.

Look for the Lost Sierra Plein Air Festival, the return of outdoor music, and seasonal railroad programming.
