Portola is our first pick when the group wants a complete round close to the Lodge. John Houck’s layout combines open riverfront space with trees, changing lines, and short and long tees. Newer players can keep things approachable; stronger throwers still have decisions to make.

A putter or midrange is enough to get started. Bring your discs, drinking water, and shoes that feel good on uneven ground. You can learn the basics without turning the outing into a tournament.

Start from the tee and work toward the basket. Count each throw; fewer throws wins the hole. A current course map helps first-timers find their way.

Use shorter tees where available, keep throws controlled, and let everyone move at a comfortable pace. A few successful short throws beat chasing a wild one.

Wait until the fairway is clear, stay behind the thrower, and give park users priority. Let faster groups play through and leave trees and ground as you found them.

A few things

Where can we play disc golf near Graeagle and Portola?

Portola Riverwalk is the full eighteen-hole option, about ten minutes from the Lodge. Brewing Lair in Blairsden offers nine wooded holes about ten to fifteen minutes away. Pioneer Park’s nine baskets are in Quincy, about forty-five to fifty-five minutes away.

Which course is best for beginners?

Pioneer’s mostly flat park setting suits a relaxed first round, particularly on a Quincy day. Closer to the Lodge, use Portola’s shorter tees. Brewing Lair is a fun shorter outing, with trees and slopes adding more to think about.

Are the courses free?

The three courses on our shortlist are listed as free to play. Brewing Lair is private brewery property with access during business hours. Food, drinks, discs, and any special event charges are separate; verify current arrangements before visiting.

Can children and non-players join us?

A casual round can work well for a mixed group that is comfortable walking the terrain. Portola has a riverside park setting, Brewing Lair has uneven wooded ground, and Pioneer is mostly flat. Keep children behind each thrower and allow extra time.

Can we bring a dog?

Brewing Lair welcomes leashed dogs under its visitor rules. Check current park and course rules for Portola and Pioneer, keep dogs away from active throws, and pack out waste.

Is disc golf available all year?

Snow, wet ground, seasonal access, and business hours affect the choices. Check current conditions and brewery hours near your visit. A listing for a course does not guarantee it is playable on your dates.

Can we practice at the Lodge?

Yes. Two baskets in the yard make it easy to fit in casual putting practice when weather and ground conditions allow. They are a private practice feature, rather than an eighteen- or nine-hole course.
