Lake Davis suits groups who want a picnic, a short shoreline walk or a fishing day without making a high-country lake circuit. It is about seven miles north of Portola, according to the city. Choose a short out-and-back for mixed abilities or reserve a full day for an independently arranged boat or fishing outing.

Choose the activity first, then the access point. Our suggested plan is deliberately flexible: a morning outside, an unhurried picnic, and enough afternoon left for your group to enjoy the Lodge.

01

Choose your kind of lake day.

Choose your kind of lake day.

For a picnic and a short walk

Bring lunch and choose an established day-use stop. The Forest Service trail overview lists the Lake Davis Trail as seven miles each way, shared by walkers, cyclists and equestrians. It is not a seven-mile loop. You can choose a short out-and-back that fits your group instead of treating the full route as a requirement.

For the anglers in your group

Make fishing the main event, with everyone else free to read, walk, or enjoy the view. Arrange tackle and any guiding separately. Use current California Department of Fish and Wildlife information to check licenses and regulations before you go. See our fishing getaway guide for a broader trip plan.

For a paddle or boating outing

Bring appropriate equipment or confirm arrangements before departure. Honker Cove and Lightning Tree are established launch locations; choose the facility that suits your craft and check its current operation. Wind can make small-craft outings unsuitable. Keep a shoreline alternative ready.

Relaxed morning versus a longer outing

For a relaxed visit, pack lunch, choose a developed stop and turn around after a comfortable amount of walking. For an active day, map the exact trail segment and return distance before leaving. The full seven-mile route followed back to its start would mean about fourteen miles; do not present it to the group as a casual lake stroll. Compare the Lake Davis Explore entry before choosing access.

Morning: pack once, leave room in the plan

Have breakfast together, fill water bottles, and pack a picnic before leaving. Take layers, sun protection, a rubbish bag, and an offline map. Agree on the main activity and a meeting point so nobody spends the morning waiting for a plan to emerge.

Midday: stay where you are enjoying yourselves

A good view and a shared lunch can be the destination. Choose a walking turnaround time instead of a distance target if your group has different energy levels. Let the anglers linger only if everyone has a comfortable way to spend that time.

Afternoon: an optional Portola stop, then home

If the group wants another stop, choose a meal or a little town time in Portola. Otherwise head back to the Lodge: the pool table, deck, and shared kitchen are part of the getaway too. Browse food and drink before making a meal reservation.

A good lake day leaves room for everyone to enjoy it their own way.

Access and facilities

Use the official Lake Davis recreation map and guide for orientation, then check current information with the land manager. A map is not a live report of road, dock, restroom, water, or parking availability. Allow for applicable day-use or launch fees.

Weather and the season

This picnic-and-walk plan assumes suitable access and conditions. A sunny forecast in town does not settle the wind or temperature at the lake. Keep an extra layer handy, and choose another day if conditions do not suit the activity. For a change of plan, try our weather backup guide.

Match the stop to your people

For mobility needs, check the specific route between parking, the picnic spot, and the water. For a dog outing, confirm the rules for each stop and pack the supplies your dog needs. Choose a place the whole group can enjoy without making anyone sit out the main event.

Questions before you go.

Questions before you go.

Is Lake Davis the same outing as the Lakes Basin?

No. Lake Davis is north of Portola. Our Lakes Basin day guide describes a different mountain outing. Pick the landscape and activity you want rather than combining both into a rushed first visit.

Do we need to book an activity?

A picnic and a walk can be a simple self-planned day when access is suitable. Boats, equipment, guiding, and any other paid activities are separate arrangements; confirm them directly with the provider. A Lodge reservation does not include them.

Where can we check official information?

Start with the City of Portola Lake Davis page, Plumas National Forest, and the Forest Service recreation guide linked above. Follow current posted instructions at the site.

Can this be part of a longer group getaway?

Yes. Make Lake Davis one outing in a stay that also leaves time to gather. Explore The Lost Sierra Lodge, with five bedrooms, three bathrooms, and room for up to ten, or ask the hosts about your dates.

Do we need two cars for the trail?

Not for a short out-and-back from one parked car. A point-to-point walk needs a pickup arranged in advance; decide that before starting. Do not rely on finding a ride at the far end.
