Volcano Lake and Mountain Mine combine three of the region’s strongest attractions in one hike: a quiet high-country lake, remnants of Sierra mining history, and commanding views of the Sierra Buttes and North Yuba country. The old mining route climbs steadily away from Sardine Lake Road into a more exposed and rugged landscape.
The approach: Begin near Sardine Lake Road, across from the Packer Lake turnoff area. Confirm the exact starting point with downloaded navigation.
Along the way: An old mining road, rolling climbs, a crossing near Sardine Creek, exposed rocky terrain, Volcano Lake, and the historic Mountain Mine area. The lake spur can be easy to overlook.
Host tip: Download the map and visit both destinations. Volcano Lake brings the quiet alpine setting, while the mine area opens the larger views that make this route memorable.
Before you go: Carry plenty of water; substantial portions can feel hot and exposed. Stay out of mine openings and away from unstable structures, shafts, and equipment.
