Upper Salmon & Horse Lake Trail

Upper Salmon & Horse Lake Trail

Keep the hike gentle and leave room for a lakeside afternoon.

LOCAL PHOTOGRAPH / THE LOST SIERRA

Easy · About 2 mi · Rocky shoreline · 1 hr+ with stops

This approachable high-country trail follows the rocky northern shoreline of Upper Salmon Lake before continuing through the forest toward neighboring Horse Lake. With granite, clear water, wetlands, wildflowers, and glimpses of the Sierra Buttes, it offers a genuine alpine experience without a demanding climb. The two lakes encourage an unhurried outing. Walk, swim, fish, picnic, or simply find a quiet piece of shoreline and stay awhile.

The approach: Upper Salmon Lake, reached from Gold Lake Highway and Upper Salmon Lake Road

Along the way: Rocky shoreline, forested singletrack, mountain views, lake access, and a few less-obvious sections near the water. Parking can be limited during summer weekends and holidays.

Host tip: Make Horse Lake your turnaround point to keep this an easy hike. The trail climbs much more steeply beyond Horse Lake toward Deer Lake, turning the outing into a longer and more demanding route.

Before you go: Respect the privacy of the historic lodge and any posted private areas along Upper Salmon Lake. Download the route before driving into the mountains, as cell service is unreliable.
