Easy · Under 0.5 mi · Uneven granite · 30–45 min
Fern Falls offers a short but wonderfully untamed waterfall walk along Graeagle Creek. Rather than following pavement to a distant overlook, this route steps directly into the landscape, climbing over granite and following the sound of moving water through the forest. The falls are surrounded by rock, wildflowers, and creekside vegetation. The route is brief, but its rough footing and less-obvious path give it considerably more character than its mileage suggests.
The approach: Along Gold Lake Road, approximately six miles from Highway 89
Along the way: A short natural trail with large granite steps, rocky footing, forest, creek views, and seasonal wildflowers such as penstemon, mountain lilac, and mariposa lilies. The route can become faint in places, so pay attention to the creek and your return direction.
Host tip: Visit while the creek is still carrying spring or early-summer snowmelt. Fern Falls and Frazier Falls make an excellent two-waterfall outing along Gold Lake Road.
Before you go: The short distance does not make this an accessible stroll. Wear shoes with traction and expect uneven granite. Waterfall flow changes substantially through the season, and the trail may be difficult to follow when vegetation is high.
