Easy · 1.4 mi · 206 ft · 30–60 min + stops
Few easy hikes deliver a setting as spectacular as the walk from Lower Sardine Lake to Upper Sardine Lake. The jagged Sierra Buttes rise directly above the water, creating one of the Lost Sierra’s defining views before you have taken more than a few steps. The route begins near Sardine Lake Resort and follows a rocky trail past Lower Sardine Lake toward the smaller, more secluded upper lake. The scenery grows wilder as you climb, while the modest distance keeps the experience approachable.
The approach: Near Sardine Lake Campground and Sardine Lake Resort
Along the way: A short but rocky path through forest and granite, with views across both Lower and Upper Sardine Lakes. The hike is especially striking when lingering snow remains on the Sierra Buttes.
Host tip: Take time to enjoy both lakes. Lower Sardine provides the iconic Sierra Buttes view, while Upper Sardine offers a more adventurous place for a cold-water swim. You can also combine the hike with Sand Pond, Sardine Lake Resort Boat Rentals, or Lakeside Dining at Sardine Lake Resort.
Before you go: Swimming is prohibited in Lower Sardine Lake; Upper Sardine is the swimming destination. Uneven rock and the chosen parking point affect the approach. Winter closures or unplowed roads can add substantial distance.
