Spencer Lakes reward hikers willing to continue beyond the Lakes Basin’s more familiar destinations. Beginning in the Long Lake country, the route climbs through forest, granite, wetlands, and increasingly quiet backcountry before reaching the remote Spencer Lakes. The journey feels purposeful: Long Lake provides an impressive opening act, but the smaller lakes beyond it offer the solitude and sense of discovery that make a long mountain hike worthwhile.
The approach: Long Lake and Bear Lakes Loop Trailhead off Gold Lake Highway
Along the way: A substantial approach through the Long Lake trail network, steady climbing, forested and rocky terrain, wetland scenery, and quieter trail conditions beyond the better-known lakes. The route becomes more remote as it approaches Spencer Lakes.
Host tip: Long Lake is beautiful enough to command most of a day, but keep moving if Spencer Lakes are your objective. Save your longest shoreline break for the destination, then enjoy Long Lake again on the return.
Before you go: Carry everything needed for a self-supported day. Cell service is unreliable, and the quieter upper portions of the route may receive less maintenance than the main Long Lake trails. Download the AllTrails map and check recent reviews for snow, water crossings, fallen trees, and trail visibility.
