Smith, Rock & Long Lake Circuit

Three alpine lakes linked into a true full-day circuit.

This grand Lakes Basin circuit links three distinctly different alpine lakes into one of the most complete hiking days near Graeagle. The route climbs from the forest near Gray Eagle Lodge into the high country, traveling through Smith Creek country before reaching Rock Lake, Long Lake, and the rugged terrain surrounding Mount Elwell. The pleasure of this hike comes from its changing character. Shaded forest gives way to granite, open mountain slopes, lake views, and long stretches where the Lakes Basin feels much larger and wilder than it appears from the road. • • • • • • •

The approach: Smith Lake Trailhead near Gray Eagle Lodge. Navigate to the exact AllTrails trailhead rather than searching only for Smith Lake.

Along the way: A long forested approach, substantial climbing, creek crossings or wet sections during runoff, several trail junctions, and an increasingly alpine landscape. Rock Lake offers a beautiful place to pause or swim, while Long Lake brings the scale and granite scenery of the central Lakes Basin into view.

Host tip: This is not a hike to rush. Start early, bring a towel and a generous lunch, and choose one lake for a meaningful break. A swim at Rock or Long Lake can turn a demanding circuit into an unforgettable summer day.

Before you go: The route crosses a network of interconnected Lakes Basin trails where a missed junction can add considerable mileage. Download the complete AllTrails map and carry a backup battery. Snow, runoff, mosquitoes, fallen trees, and muddy sections may persist into early summer.
