The Mount Elwell Loop turns one of the Lakes Basin’s finest summits into a much larger high-country journey. Rather than approaching the mountain by the shortest route, this extended circuit travels through an interconnected landscape of forest, granite, creeks, lakes, and ridgelines before climbing toward Mount Elwell. The summit is the defining moment, with broad views over the Lakes Basin, Sierra Buttes, Sierra Valley, and the northern Sierra. The surrounding journey gives those views context—you arrive after traveling through the remarkable basin spread beneath you.
The approach: Follow the exact AllTrails trailhead pin and route direction. Several nearby trailheads access Mount Elwell, but they do not create the same loop.
Along the way: Long stretches of forest and singletrack, multiple trail intersections, granite slopes, steep climbing, and rugged summit terrain. The upper mountain may include loose rock, talus, exposure, and a short scramble before reaching the summit.
Host tip: Reach the summit early enough to linger over the view. Seeing the lakes and ridges from above makes the return journey through the basin even more rewarding.
Before you go: Mount Elwell is exposed to wind, strong sun, and fast-building thunderstorms. Snow can remain on shaded upper slopes after lower trails have opened. Bring sturdy footwear, layers, sun protection, and a downloaded map of the entire loop.
