Moderate · 3.4 mi loop · 650 ft · 1½–2½ hr + stops
Smith Lake feels wonderfully removed from the road despite requiring only a moderate hike. The trail climbs through the forest into a granite-framed alpine basin, where clear water reflects the surrounding trees and peaks.
The approach: The trailhead is reached from Gold Lake Highway and the road toward Gray Eagle Lodge. Use current navigation for the final forest-road turns.
Along the way: Forest, granite, creek crossings, and a beautiful mountain lake. Parts of the loop can be less obvious than the main approach, particularly near the back of the lake, so keep your downloaded map handy.
Host tip: If your priority is reaching the lake rather than completing a loop, return along the most familiar route. Bring a towel and lunch—the setting makes it easy to stay longer than planned.
Before you go: Early-season crossings may be deeper or more forceful, while late-season water can be much lower. Expect mosquitoes during part of the summer. The 3.4-mile figure describes a loop. A direct out-and-back is a different route and can be shorter; match the map to your plan.
