Lakes Basin
Several alpine lakes without committing to a full mountain circuit.
LOCAL PHOTOGRAPH / THE LOST SIERRA
Easy · 2.2 mi · Modest climbing · 1–1½ hr + stops
This compact route captures what makes the Lakes Basin so special: clear glacial lakes, granite shorelines, quiet forest, and another beautiful body of water waiting around nearly every bend. Beginning near the Bear Lakes trail system, the route passes through the Big Bear, Little Bear, and Cub Lake area before reaching Silver Lake. Each lake has a different character, making the walk feel much richer than its mileage suggests.
The approach: The Long Lake and Bear Lakes trailhead off Gold Lake Highway, near Lakes Basin Campground
Along the way: Forested singletrack, modest elevation changes, granite, several trail junctions, and frequent lake views. Big Bear, Little Bear, Cub, and Silver Lakes offer inviting places to pause along the way.
Host tip: Bring a swimsuit, picnic, and more time than the mileage appears to require. This is an easy hike to turn into a leisurely lake day. Guests who love this route may also enjoy Long Lake or one of the longer Lakes Basin loops in the Moderate Hikes section.
Before you go: The network of intersecting trails can be confusing, particularly around the Bear Lakes. Download the map before starting and check each trail sign carefully. Mosquitoes can be heavy during early summer.
