This longer Sierra Buttes approach transforms the region’s signature summit into a substantial high-country challenge. The route travels through Tamarack country before climbing steeply toward the volcanic ridges and dramatic fire lookout perched above the surrounding lakes. The final destination is familiar, but the longer approach makes the arrival feel entirely different. By the time the lookout comes into view, you have already traveled through forest, rugged mountain terrain, and a landscape increasingly dominated by the dark pinnacles of the Sierra Buttes.

The approach: Use the exact Tamarack Connector trailhead shown on AllTrails in the Packer Lake and Gold Lake Highway area.

Along the way: Forested connector trails, sustained climbing, rocky and exposed high-country terrain, dramatic views over the surrounding lakes, and the final metal staircase to the Sierra Buttes Fire Lookout. The summit structure can feel exposed for hikers uncomfortable with heights.

Host tip: The trail provides plenty of reasons to pause before the summit. Look back often as the lakes emerge below, then save time at the top to identify Packer Lake, Upper and Lower Sardine Lakes, Young America Lake, and distant northern Sierra peaks.

Before you go: The upper mountain is exposed to wind, lightning, strong sun, and sudden temperature changes. Begin early and avoid the lookout during thunderstorms. The final staircase is optional; the views from the rocks beneath the lookout are already exceptional.
