An endurance day from Sierra City to the lookout and back.

This is the long way to the Sierra Buttes—and one of the most demanding mapped day hikes in the Lost Sierra. Beginning near Sierra City, the route follows the Pacific Crest Trail through forest and exposed mountain terrain before making the steep final climb to the fire lookout. The extended approach reveals the scale of the Sierra Buttes in a way the shorter routes cannot. The summit remains distant for much of the day, gradually drawing closer until the route reaches the final ridge and its unforgettable staircase.
The approach: Pacific Crest Trail crossing on Highway 49 near Sierra City. Navigate to the exact AllTrails trailhead rather than the shorter access points near Packer Lake or Packer Saddle.
Along the way: A long PCT approach, more than 4,000 feet of climbing, forest and exposed chaparral, views toward Tamarack, Sardine, and Young America Lakes, a steep summit push, and approximately 178 metal stairs leading to the lookout.
Host tip: Treat this as the day’s only objective. Begin near first light, carry a real meal in addition to trail snacks, and plan your turnaround time before starting. If you complete the full climb, the return to Sierra City makes dinner and a cold drink feel exceptionally well earned.
Before you go: This route offers limited shade and no dependable drinking water. Carry substantially more water than you would for the shorter Packer Lake approach. Cell service is unreliable, and the summit is dangerous during thunderstorms, high winds, or electrical activity. If timing, weather, or energy begins working against you, turn around—the mountain will still be there tomorrow.
