Upper Salmon to Gold Lake via the PCT

A one-way mountain traverse that begins with a two-vehicle plan.

Strenuous · 8.8 mi one way · 2,096 ft · 5–5½ hr + shuttle

This point-to-point hike connects two beautiful lake destinations by way of the Pacific Crest Trail. Beginning near Upper Salmon Lake, the route climbs into the high country before traveling through forest, open slopes, and the rugged landscape between the Sierra Buttes and Gold Lake. The mileage is lower than several other hikes in this category, but the elevation gain, remote terrain, and need to arrange transportation between trailheads make it a genuine full-day undertaking.

The approach: Upper Salmon Lake Trailhead and the Gold Lake trailhead shown on AllTrails. This is a point-to-point route requiring a vehicle at each end or a prearranged shuttle.

Along the way: Rocky shoreline terrain near Upper Salmon Lake, a sustained climb to the Pacific Crest Trail, forest and exposed high-country sections, distant Sierra Buttes views, and a descent toward Gold Lake.

Host tip: Place your recovery vehicle at Gold Lake, then begin from Upper Salmon Lake. Ending beside the larger lake gives the day a satisfying finish and creates the option for a swim, picnic, or relaxed shoreline stop once the hiking is complete.

Before you go: Transportation is the defining logistical challenge. Do not begin until both vehicles are positioned and every hiker understands the destination. Carry the route offline, because cell service cannot be relied upon at either trailhead or along the PCT.
