Sierra Buttes
A compact PCT loop through Sierra Buttes lake country.
LOCAL PHOTOGRAPH / THE LOST SIERRA
Moderate · 2.7 mi · Rocky high country · 1½–2 hr
This compact loop offers an accessible taste of the Pacific Crest Trail while visiting the Tamarack Lakes beneath the Sierra Buttes. The route mixes renowned long-distance trail, quieter lake country, rocky terrain, and broad mountain scenery.
The approach: Access is generally from the Packer Saddle and Tamarack Lakes area. Use current trail navigation because seasonal road access can change.
Along the way: High-elevation forest, rocky tread, portions of the Pacific Crest Trail, and visits to the Tamarack Lakes. Road connectors and intersecting trails make a downloaded map helpful.
Host tip: Pair the hike with Packer Lake or continue toward the Sierra Buttes overlooks. Starting early leaves time to enjoy the lakes rather than treating the loop as a race.
Before you go: Access roads may remain snowy or rough after the main highways are clear. Weather around the Sierra crest can change quickly.
