Pacific Crest Trail to Dugan Pond

Pacific Crest Trail to Dugan Pond

A short introduction to a very long trail.

LOCAL PHOTOGRAPH / THE LOST SIERRA

Easy · 1.7 mi · High-country trail · 30–60 min

This short route offers an approachable taste of the Pacific Crest Trail without requiring a backpack, shuttle, or all-day commitment. From the Packer Saddle area, the trail passes through quiet high-country forest to Dugan Pond, a secluded body of water beneath the Sierra Buttes. The destination is modest, but the experience feels distinctly backcountry. You are walking part of one of America’s great long-distance trails through a landscape that invites you to continue exploring.

The approach: Near Packsaddle Campground and the Packer Saddle trail system; use the linked route for the precise starting point

Along the way: High-country forest, natural trail, a peaceful pond, limited crowds, and a brief introduction to the broader PCT network surrounding the Sierra Buttes.

Host tip: Pair the hike with Packer Lake or drive to a nearby Sierra Buttes viewpoint. If this short stretch leaves you wanting more, the Moderate and Hard Hikes sections include longer routes using the PCT.

Before you go: This is a remote mountain trail despite its short length. Download your map and directions before leaving the Lodge, bring layers, and check seasonal road access. Snow can remain in the Packer Saddle area well after lower-elevation trails have opened.
