Easy · About 0.5–1.6 mi · Natural river trail · 30–60 min
Loves Falls is a short, beautiful walk along the Pacific Crest Trail beside the North Yuba River. Forest, granite, rushing water, and a footbridge lead to a series of cascades where the river tumbles through a narrow mountain channel. The waterfall earned its name from a heart-shaped rock that divides part of the flow. Whether or not you spot the heart immediately, the combination of river, forest, and moving water makes this one of the most satisfying short hikes near Sierra City.
The approach: The Pacific Crest Trail crossing on Highway 49, just northeast of Sierra City
Along the way: A wooded segment of the Pacific Crest Trail, North Yuba River views, a trail bridge, granite, and several energetic cascades. Rocks beside the river can be wet and slick.
Host tip: Visit during spring or early summer when snowmelt gives the falls their greatest power. Continue into Sierra City for lunch or combine the hike with Lower Sardine Lake, Sand Pond, or Packer Lake.
Before you go: Stay on the established trail and use care around the falls. The river moves quickly, rocks may be slippery, and there are steep areas beside the water. Winter snow and ice can transform this easy summer hike into a much more serious outing.
