← EXPLORE THE LOST SIERRA
Plumas-Eureka State Park
A mountain lake above Johnsville, with a little adventure in the approach.
LOCAL PHOTOGRAPH / THE LOST SIERRA
Eureka Lake sits below Eureka Peak in Plumas-Eureka State Park, bringing swimming, picnicking, and mountain scenery together above the historic mining town of Johnsville. It feels distinctly removed from town even though the initial drive is relatively short. Allow time for the final approach rather than treating the drive estimate as arrival at the water.
At the water: The park identifies Eureka Lake for swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. There is no rental counter at the lake, so any paddlecraft must be carried or transported by your group.
Getting there: The final road is narrow and rough. Passenger-car guests should plan to park near the Ski Bowl and walk rather than assume they can drive all the way. Check the park’s current access guidance first.
Host tip: Bring lunch and make the lake the main event; add the park museum or mining history if your group has time.
Before you go: Dogs are restricted on most state-park trails. Confirm your specific road or trail route with the park; dogs must remain on a leash no longer than six feet.
