The journey to Deer Lake begins beside Upper Salmon Lake, passes little Horse Lake, and climbs into increasingly dramatic Sierra Buttes country. Deer Lake sits in a beautiful high-elevation basin where clear water, granite, forest, and mountain views make the climb worthwhile.
The approach: Begin at Upper Salmon Lake in the Lakes Basin–Sierra Buttes region. Parking can be limited on summer weekends.
Along the way: Rocky shoreline trail near Upper Salmon Lake, a pass by Horse Lake, and a steeper climb toward Deer Lake. High elevation, sun exposure, and uneven footing add to the effort.
Host tip: Bring a swimsuit and plan a generous break at Deer Lake. The water and setting are the reward, and this is a hike that deserves more than a quick photograph before turning around.
Before you go: Snow may linger into summer. Afternoon thunderstorms develop quickly around the Sierra Buttes, so begin early and watch the sky.
