This loop travels through one of the most lake-filled corners of the Lakes Basin. Depending on the exact route, hikers can pass Big Bear, Little Bear, Cub, Round, and Silver Lakes while enjoying glimpses of Long Lake and remnants of the area’s mining past.
The approach: Begin near Lakes Basin Campground and the Bear Lakes trailhead off Gold Lake Highway.
Along the way: A varied loop over forest trail and exposed granite with several opportunities to stop beside the water. Junctions connect to other Lakes Basin routes, so downloaded navigation is valuable.
Host tip: Travel counterclockwise or clockwise according to the lake where you most want to linger. Pack a swimsuit and lunch rather than treating every lake as something to hurry past.
Before you go: Trail signage and footing vary. Snow, high creek water, mosquitoes, and afternoon thunderstorms can all affect the experience.

Why go
