Smith Peak is one of the closest places to earn a true mountaintop view from the Lodge. The route climbs through the quiet forest west of Lake Davis before emerging onto an open summit with broad views across the lake, Sierra Valley, Portola, and the surrounding mountains. Much of the hike follows forest and lookout-access roads rather than narrow singletrack. That makes the navigation relatively straightforward, but the sustained climb and exposed final miles still deliver a satisfying mountain workout.

The approach: Smith Peak Road west of Lake Davis. Several starting variations are possible, so navigate to the exact trailhead shown on your downloaded map.

Along the way: A long, steady ascent through forest, increasingly open views near the summit, and a fire-lookout site at the top. Because some forest-road sections may be drivable under favorable conditions, published route lengths can vary.

Host tip: Start in the morning, when the light across Lake Davis is beautiful and the summit is less likely to be affected by afternoon wind or thunderstorms. Bring binoculars—the high, open vantage point is excellent for scanning the surrounding landscape and watching for soaring birds.

Before you go: There is no reliable drinking water or visitor service along the route. The summit can be windy and much colder than the Lodge. Forest roads may be rough, muddy, snow-covered, or unsuitable for low-clearance vehicles early in the season.
