The Round and Silver Lakes Loop is one of the best ways to experience the variety of the Lakes Basin in a single hike. The route climbs through forest and granite to a collection of mountain lakes, wildflower meadows, and remnants of the area’s mining past before returning on a long, scenic descent. The first half earns the elevation; the second gives it back while carrying you through a changing sequence of lakes and viewpoints. Bring a swimsuit if the day is warm.
The approach: Round Lake Trailhead near Gold Lake Highway and Gold Lake Lodge
Along the way: A steady first-half climb, forest and granite terrain, several alpine lakes, old mining traces near Round Lake, and a generally more forgiving descent. Numerous trail intersections make this an excellent loop to hike with a downloaded map.
Host tip: Do not rush from lake to lake. Pick one for lunch and another for a swim, turning the loop into a genuine high-country day rather than simply completing the mileage.
Before you go: Several Lakes Basin trails cross or briefly overlap this route, and mapped variations do not always follow the same sequence. Snowfields, wet trail, and mosquitoes may remain early in the season. Afternoon thunderstorms can develop quickly over the surrounding ridges.
