← EXPLORE THE LOST SIERRA
Johnsville & Lakes Basin
A wetland nature trail to revisit when boardwalk access is restored.
LOCAL PHOTOGRAPH / THE LOST SIERRA
Nature walk · 0.9 mi · Gentle terrain · 30–60 min
This short interpretive route explores wetland and forest around Sand Pond near Lower Sardine Lake. It belongs in a relaxed Sardine Lakes day when the trail is open. Boardwalk work has affected access, so treat it as a conditional option and confirm the current closure before setting out.
The approach: Sand Pond Picnic Site near Lower Sardine Lake
Along the way: A short interpretive route through a high-country pond, wetland, and forest setting.
Host tip: When the full trail reopens, walk it before settling in for a swim and picnic at Sand Pond. Continue afterward to Lower Sardine Lake, Upper Sardine Lake, or Sardine Lake Resort for a complete day beneath the Sierra Buttes.
Before you go: The Forest Service lists an interpretive-trail closure during boardwalk work. Confirm the current closure order before planning this walk, and do not cross barriers. Access to the swimming area is a separate question. Dogs are prohibited at Sand Pond.
