← EXPLORE THE LOST SIERRA
Johnsville & Lakes Basin
A small walk through a much bigger mining story.
LOCAL PHOTOGRAPH / THE LOST SIERRA
Nature walk · About 0.3 mi · Gentle historic grounds · 30–90 min
This short walk through the historic heart of Plumas-Eureka State Park brings the Lost Sierra’s mining era to life. Rather than following a conventional hiking trail, guests wander among the Mohawk Stamp Mill, Bushman five-stamp mill, stable, mine office, Moriarty House, blacksmith shop, and other remnants of the community that grew beneath Eureka Peak. The buildings, machinery, mountain setting, and nearby museum make this one of the area’s best combinations of outdoor exploration and local history.
The approach: Plumas-Eureka State Park museum and visitor center
Along the way: A compact historic area with outdoor structures, mining equipment, interpretive information, and views toward Eureka Peak. Summer programs may include guided tours, blacksmithing demonstrations, and other living-history experiences.
Host tip: Begin inside the museum so the outdoor machinery and buildings have more meaning as you explore. Guests wanting more time outside can add the nearby Madora Lake Nature Walk.
Before you go: The park is open year-round for day use, but museum hours, tours, demonstrations, and access to historic buildings vary seasonally. Check the current schedule before visiting.
