Portola, Clio & Graeagle
River views, wildlife, and quiet time beside moving water.
LOCAL PHOTOGRAPH / THE LOST SIERRA
The upper Middle Fork winds through the valleys around Portola, Clio, Blairsden, and Graeagle before entering remote canyon country. Near the Lodge, its appeal is the changing light, willow-lined banks, birdlife, and seasonal color. Think of it as a scenic stop or a carefully planned fishing outing rather than a dependable swimming hole.
At the water: Depth, current, vegetation, and access vary substantially. The Portola-to-Graeagle stretch should not be treated as a casual self-guided tubing or floating route. For swimming, choose the Mill Pond or a lake; for a river trip, arrange qualified local guidance.
Getting there: Use established public approaches near legal access points. Bridges do not make adjacent ranch, resort, residential, or railroad property public. The Clio railroad trestle is not a river-access route.
Host tip: Choose a short riverside pause for morning light or fall color, then continue to town for a meal.
Before you go: Snowmelt can bring cold, fast water; summer can leave shallow, weedy channels. Never enter high, fast, muddy, or debris-filled water.
