Long Lake Loop circles one of the Lakes Basin’s largest and most beautiful alpine lakes while weaving through granite, forest, smaller ponds, and elevated viewpoints. It provides a fuller hiking experience than simply driving to the shoreline and introduces guests to the interconnected character of the Lakes Basin trail system.
The approach: Begin from the Long Lake and Bear Lakes trail area off Gold Lake Highway.
Along the way: Forest trail, exposed granite, rocky climbs, smaller lakes, and shifting views across Long Lake. A few steep or loose sections give the loop its moderate rating.
Host tip: Pack for a lake day as well as a hike. Long Lake has numerous inviting places to stop, and the outing is far more memorable when you leave time for the water.
Before you go: The loop is generally most accessible from early summer through fall, depending on snow. Download the map because the Lakes Basin contains many intersecting trails.
