← EXPLORE THE LOST SIERRA
Eastern Plumas County
A bigger-sky lake day where pine forest meets the high desert.
LOCAL PHOTOGRAPH / THE LOST SIERRA
Frenchman Lake has a different personality from the granite-framed alpine lakes: more open sky, sandy shoreline, and space for a lively day on the water. Choose it for swimming, a picnic, fishing, or an outing with your own boat. Lunker Point is one of the guidebook’s useful starting places for a beach-oriented visit.
At the water: Bring your own kayak or paddleboard, or plan around motorized boating and watersports. Frenchman and Lunker Point launch areas serve different parts of the lake; confirm ramp conditions and any fees before towing a boat.
Getting there: Pack water, lunch, shade, and offline directions. Build extra time into the drive if you want to pause around the Little Last Chance landscape.
Host tip: Arrive while the water is calmer, claim a shoreline base, and let everyone choose between swimming, paddling, and doing very little.
Before you go: Afternoon wind, changing reservoir levels, seasonal services, and current restrictions can alter your plan.
