Lakes Basin Alpine Mountain Biking

Lakes Basin Alpine Mountain Biking

Slow down for the lakes. Build a mapped route; Intermediate to advanced.

LOCAL PHOTOGRAPH / THE LOST SIERRA

The basin is a network rather than one prescribed bike loop. Granite steps, narrow tread, climbing, lakes, and occasional walking create a more exploratory experience than a flowing purpose-built descent.

Distance: Build a mapped route

Effort: Intermediate to advanced

Climbing/descending: Varies substantially

Allow: Allow a mountain half-day or more

From the Lodge: 25–35 min to many trailheads

Bike: Mountain bike for rocky alpine terrain

Plan: Consider a legal route around Long Lake, the Bear Lakes, or Round Lake with local advice. Check every connector, bridge, trail-use rule, and seasonal access point; a hiking map is not a bike-permission map.

Host tip: Let one or two lakes shape the outing instead of trying to link every landmark.

Before you ride: Do not use the Pacific Crest Trail or designated wilderness as bicycle connectors. Expect hikers and horses; confirm e-bike rules separately.
