LOCAL PHOTOGRAPH / THE LOST SIERRA
The classic route connects Sunrise, Butcher Ranch, Third Divide, and First Divide. Historic mining terrain, rock gardens, crossings, forest flow, exposure, and short climbs make it a full backcountry experience.
Distance: About 15 mi
Effort: Advanced · demanding backcountry
Climbing/descending: Over 4,000 ft descending; some climbs
Allow: 3–5 hr riding + shuttle
From the Lodge: 1–1½ hr to Downieville
Bike: Full-suspension trail or enduro bike
Plan: Confirm Packer Saddle access, the classic line, and shuttle arrangements with Downieville Outfitters. Pauley Creek and Second Divide are different technical or cross-country alternatives; Big Boulder is a more aggressive undertaking.
Host tip: Make the first visit a classic lap with local advice. Leave time for food and a wander in Downieville afterward.
Before you ride: This is not a first mountain-bike ride. Walk features beyond your skill and leave time for fatigue, repairs, and changing conditions.
